The Citrus Research and Development Foundation announces its CATP11 call for research proposals to develop solutions to manage Citrus Greening (Huanglongbing), Canker and other emerging diseases threatening Florida citrus production. New and continuing research initiatives should complement or build on the existing portfolio of research projects currently summarized in the progress reports posted at www.citrusrdf.org. Optimizing continued citrus production in groves already affected by Citrus Greening including the successful propagation of new plantings in endemic areas is a priority emphasis of this 2011 Citrus Advanced Technology Program.

The Citrus Advanced Technology Program is open to applicants from any institutional, university or government affiliation, and from any geographic region or discipline.

Interested applicants may submit a single page preproposal description of their proposed project thru October 3, 2011 as detailed in the Preproposal Instructions available at www.citrusrdf.org. After review, a list of projects selected will be posted on the CRDF web site (by October 21, 2011), inviting those researchers to submit full proposals by November 21, 2011 for consideration for funding, with notice of awards expected at the beginning of March 2012.

Required: Proposal Cover Form

Most fields on the first page of the Proposal Cover Sheet are the same as the Preproposal Form (e.g., title, name, address, etc.). You can refer to the Preproposal Instructions for more information about filling in those fields.

Project Type Select a project type depending on whether this is a new project, revised, etc.

Project Category Select a category that best represents the nature of your project.

DNA/Biohazard Regs If you are working with regulated agents or materials, check “Yes” to indicate you are in compliance with their guidelines. Otherwise, check “No”.

Funding Requested (total project) Enter the total funding for your project factoring all years included in Duration. This value is not automatically calculated and must be entered manually.

Total Direct (this year), Salaries, Expenses and Equipment These values, representing funding you are requesting for the current year, will populate automatically from the Budget Form you complete on Page 2.

Abstract Summarize your project into a 300-word abstract. Do not be verbose, but include sufficient detail that will allow panels to have a clear idea of your project design, objectives and anticipated benefits.

Budget Form and Justification Please enter your salaries and expenses on this page of the Proposal Cover Form. Do not leave any fields blank, so be sure to input 0′s if there are no costs associated with an item. Entering 0′s where no costs are expected will help ensure that all other costs are correctly factored.

Supplemental: Subcontractor Expense Form If you have cooperators (consultants, professional services or institutions) that will receive funds from your project, complete one of these forms for each subcontractor.

How to Submit Your Full Proposal Package

Be sure to download the Full Proposal Formatting Guidelines for more information on how to format your Full Proposal Document.

First, be sure your Full Proposal Document is written before assembling your Full Proposal Package. Next, navigate to the Proposal Cover Sheet link to access that form, save it to local disk, and enter the information in that PDF Form. Be sure to not miss filling out the Budget Form on Page 2 of the Proposal Cover Sheet. Address matching and in-kind contributions as those are competitively evaluated along with the rest of your information.

Next, save a copy of your Proposal Cover Sheet to your local disk under a unique name. Do the same for any supplemental budget forms that you need to complete.

Click on the E-Submit button in the upper right of the Proposal Cover Sheet. An email will be created containing the proper delivery address and attached Proposal Cover Sheet. If your system does not create this email message, manually compose a new message using the address of catp@citrusrdf.org.

Next, include your Full Proposal Document (up to 15 pages), Proposal Cover Sheet and any supplemental budget forms as attached PDF documents. When you are ready, send all attached documents in this single email message to CRDF. Be sure to copy yourself in the email message to be sure that it sends correctly. You should receive an acknowledgement of your submission. If you do not receive this acknowledgement, advise CRDF that you sent a proposal and request assistance in confirming that it was received.

Citrus trees and crops currently face serious threats from infectious diseases. Currently citrus greening disease of huanglongbing (HLB) is the greatest threat. The Citrus Research and Development Foundation, Inc. (“Foundation”) utilizes the Citrus Advanced Technology Program to search internationally for solutions to control HLB and other citrus diseases through sponsored research.

Supported Areas of Research

The Citrus Research and Development Foundation requests research proposals to develop solutions to control Citrus Greening (Huanglongbing), Canker and other emerging diseases threatening Florida citrus production. New research initiatives should complement the existing portfolio of research projects currently summarized in the progress reports posted at www.citrusrdf.org .

Citrus Advanced Technology Program Criteria

First, a single-page preproposal summary is submitted to the Foundation for consideration for funding. Preproposals are reviewed by the Foundation and Scientific Advisory Board and evaluated for their merit and likelihood of practical solutions relative to the citrus crises we are facing.

The duration proposed for your project should not exceed three years.

Funding

Individual award amounts will be based on the recommendations made to the Foundation as a result of the evaluation process.

Awardees are encouraged to establish regular contact with the Foundation staff and industry partners to ensure that results and disease interventions identified in their research receive early attention for further development and commercial application.

Awardees are encouraged to establish regular contact with the Foundation staff and industry partners to ensure that results and disease interventions identified in their research receive early attention for further development and commercial application.

Awardees will be required to submit quarterly project updates and annual reports.

Eligibility

Any appropriate research institution or organization is eligible to submit applications for funding, including academic and private organizations, non-profit, commercial, federal or state entities and individuals of any citizenship or location.
